WHAT IS PATERNITY DNA TEST?
Paternity refers to fatherhood. A DNA paternity test uses DNA, usually taken from a cheek SWAB, to determine whether a man is the child’s biological father.

Paternity test can be done before and after birth of child
A prenatal paternity test can be performed before a baby is born. This test can be carried out from as early as 7 weeks after conception (or 9 weeks after the last period). It is a non-invasive method that requires a blood sample from the mother and a mouth swab from the alleged father.
A DNA paternity test can be done immediately following birth and any time thereafter. Probability of paternity is determined by taking buccal (cheek) cells collected from the alleged father and the baby and then comparing the DNA from the baby with that of the alleged father.
WHAT DOES A PATERNITY TEST INVOLVE?
The most common way to do the test is to use a “buccal swab.” This means that a cotton swab is rubbed on the cheeks inside the mouth to collect a tissue sample. The tissue samples from the cotton swab are sent to a lab that specializes in genetic marker testing.
